EVERYDAY TOOLS
Plain text
lasts.
Apps come and go. A folder of plain text files is still readable decades later, with almost any tool.
Readable anywhere
A text file opens on every computer and every phone. It needs no account, no export and no particular program, so the notes outlive the tool that created them.
A little structure goes far
Headings marked with a simple convention, short paragraphs and lists are enough. When a note needs a date, the year-month-day order keeps files sorted correctly by name.
Search is the index
With one folder and clear file names, search does most of the organising. Folders inside folders rarely help as much as a good name.
Copies are cheap
Small files are easy to back up and easy to compare. Keeping two copies in different places turns an accident into a minor inconvenience.
An open notebook, one small idea at a time.
